Good Evening, God
My wish – or prayer request — is that You lift up MILLIONS of people to work together for the common good. Not the good of special interests. Not the good of ideologies. Not the good of adversarial parties or fractions.
I thought about this when I listened to a TED talk by Rebecca Onie. She cofounded a program at a big hospital that actually dared to ask if patients had enough to eat, had a place to live, had help with chronic illnesses. Then they CONNECTED folks to the needed help. Amazing? It sure shouldn’t be.
Good health is far more than medical care. And it turns out most of us know this. Ms. Onie did surveys of all the various ethnicities, genders and political spectrums we come in….asking the same question: If you had money to invest in Good Health, where would you put it?
The results were the same within a percentage point or two. 19% to affordable housing! It seems that our zip code weighs more heavily on our health than our genetic code. 25% to good food and accessibility to good food. And yes, God, I am giving to the Food Bank.
She tells how doctors in poor areas are prescribing antibiotics to folks who have no food at home or are living in their car. Many of these patients return with more serious and more expensive illnesses. Treating illnesses after folks are sick isn’t as effective as working to provide the basics that support good health and keep folks from getting ill.
Actually, God, there are millions of good folks working to make this a better world. Please help us all do more . . . and to do it in a spirit of togetherness.
